Dhrangadhra Day

Surendranagar, Gujarat

April 25, 2023 to April 25, 2024

The Satyagraha movement, started by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930, impacted many regions all over the country. This included the Dhrangadhra region of the Surendranagar district of Gujarat. During numerous activities, leaders like Maneklal Nanjibhai and others, along with local people, were keen to have a Kathiawad Rajkiya Parishad session in Dhrangadhra. Unfortunately, the government imposed a ban on conducting sessions in the region. The discussion carried out by various leaders was unproductive, and the ban continued.

Eventually, the whole situation became critical and took a violent turn. In such a situation, a deputation was sent by the workers of Kathiawad parishad to negotiate with authorities. The delegation ignored the directive given by the parishad, resulting in an unsatisfactory settlement with the state authorities. The restless people affected by this incident eventually decided to celebrate Dhrangadhra Day’ on 21st September 1931. The president of Dhrangadhra Praja Mandal Bombay, Shri Manishanker Trivedi, also came to celebrate the day.

The government decided to put a ban on this, but the workers' enthusiasm could not be contained.
