Veluvolu Sita Ramaiah

Guntur, Andhra Pradesh

April 11, 2023 to April 11, 2024

Sita Ramaiah was born on 24 December 1907 in Amrutaluru, Tenali taluk, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh. He came from an agricultural family but had a strong passion for education. He dedicated himself to learning Telugu, English, Hindi, and Sanskrit. Sita Ramaiah was not only an accomplished author and poet, but also a prominent figure in India's freedom movement.

Influenced greatly by Mahatma Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement, he embraced Gandhi's principles and dedicated himself to India's freedom struggle. He played a pivotal role in the Salt Satyagraha of the region and endured nine-month imprisonment in Rajahmundry, Coimbatore, and Allipuram jails as a punishment from the authorities. He actively campaigned for the use of Khadi clothes. In addition, he participated in the Individual Satyagraha and was imprisoned for two months in Tiruchirappalli jail and paid a penalty of Rs. 300.

He worked tirelessly towards the prohibition of liquor in order to undermine the British government's revenue. He actively campaigned against the use of foreign goods and led protests to burn them in public. During the Quit India Movement in 1942, he protested the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi and organized a bandh in the Tenali area, along with fellow freedom fighters such as Kalluri Chandramouli and Avutu Rami Reddy. Unfortunately, the movement turned violent, and police firing resulted in the deaths of seven freedom fighters. Sitaramaiah was subsequently imprisoned for two years due to his involvement in the incident. After India gained independence, seven stupas were constructed in memory of the fallen freedom fighters at the site, which was named Ranarang Chowk.

In 1931, Sitaramaiah was elected as a ward member for the Tenali taluk, and in 1937, he served as the Secretary for the Guntur district Congress Committee. Additionally, he was actively involved as a member of the freedom fighters' association.
