Uchharangrai Navalshanker Dhebar was a remarkable figure in the Indian freedom movement. He was born on 21st September 1905 in the Nawanagar Princely State which was located in today’s Jamnagar district of Gujarat.

Dhebar, a lawyer by profession, left his career to join the national movement in 1936. Earlier he was associated with trade union movements and political agitations for civil rights. From the late 1930s to the early 1940s, he organized the Rajkot Satyagraha and the struggle for responsible administration and popular government against the rulers of the Kathiawar Agency. He was also a part of the Individual Satyagraha Movement and the Quit India Movement, which proved to be instrumental to the attainment of Indian independence. Dhebar was imprisoned thrice for his participation in various satyagrahas and the Quit India movement. In 1945, he took up the final struggle for responsible government for a united Saurashtra which culminated in the formation of the Saurashtra state in 1948. Dhebar served as the first chief minister of the state until 1954.

U.N. Dhebar continued to serve the nation in various capacities even after independence. His numerous contributions to the attainment of democracy and liberty for India remain inspirational to the people of this nation.
