Students unrest in Greer Bhumihar Brahmin College

Muzaffarpur, Bihar

March 27, 2023

Student unrest at Greer Bhumihar Brahmin College (G.B.B. College) was a minor event that had a significant impact on the student community in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

Greer Bhumihar Brahmin College was established in 1899 and was first known as Bhumihar Brahmin College and later as Langat Singh College. This college was one of the oldest colleges in Bihar. The period following 1919 was particularly significant in the history of G.B.B. College because it was during this time that Mahatma Gandhi was laying the groundwork for a mass movement by encouraging people from all walks of life, including students. Following Mahatma Gandhi's visit to Muzaffarpur to gather support for non-cooperation, the students at this college were encouraged to join in the Indian struggle for independence, and approximately thirty students boycotted their college. Mr. J.S. Armour was appointed as the last European principal of G.B.B. College during 1929. After which during the Civil Disobedience Movement, a large number of college students boycotted classes and jumped headfirst into the political activities of the time.

During Mahatma Gandhi's mass mobilisation and the Indian independence movement, the participation of students from Greer Bhumihar Brahmin College was instrumental.
