Sardar Patel's Speech at Bharuch, 1930

Bharuch, Gujarat

March 27, 2023

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel made an impactful speech in the Bharuch district in Gujarat around the time of Bardoli Satyagraha. His visits to such places boosted the morale of agitating peasants.

The primary reason behind the Bardoli Satyagraha was the imposition of taxes despite the failure of crops. Apart from encouraging the masses, mostly the peasants, to let go of their fear and agitate for their rights, Patel in his speech at Bharuch in 1930 also warned the British colonial government of their repressive actions. He asked the peasants, “Have you confidence in God? Do you believe in God? Do you realize that he who is born is destined to die?’ No one can escape death. If that is so, why not learn to die the death of the brave and the honourable rather than that of the cowardly? Is It not better to look for the day when history will record that you stood firm when men were being killed? Let there be innumerable arrests so that the world may find out for itself whether the dog is capable of barking or not when it wants to.”

Thus, in this way, Sardar Patel’s speeches not only aroused nationalist feelings amongst the masses but also instilled in them a feeling of being the rightful owners of their land and demanding their rights by means of satyagraha.
