Jitendra Nath Chakraborty

North 24 Parganas, West Bengal

March 17, 2023 to March 17, 2024

Jitendra Nath Chakraborty was a hero of the Indian freedom movement who remained unrecognized. He was born on 1.08.1917, in undivided Bengal, specifically in Bikrampur near Dhaka, which is presently located in Bangladesh. However, he was known by the pseudonym Ganesh Chandra Chakraborty.

He was deeply involved in various freedom-fighting movements and believed in the use of armed revolution. As a result, he was a staunch supporter of 'Masterda' Surya Sen and was inspired by his approach of direct revolt against the British Government. In 1940, Jitendra Nath Chakraborty and his followers attacked the Bikrampur Police Station, despite being poorly armed and trained, relying solely on their immense bravery and determination. The fight was uneven, and they quickly ran out of cartridges and shells. Sadly, Jitendra Nath was injured by a shell fired by the British police during the fight.

Despite being on the run, he managed to evade the British police and government network through his cunning wit. He continued his activities underground and adopted the pseudonym Ganesh Chandra instead of using his real name, Jitendra Nath. The British Government declared him an absconder and offered a reward of Rs. 500 to anyone who provided information about his whereabouts. Despite the significant amount offered, he was never caught by the British.

On 15.08.1988, he was awarded the Tamra Patra and Swatantra Sainik Samman Pension by the Government of India. He passed away on 24.12.1997, at the age of approximately 80.
