Government Repression During Quit India Movement in Krishna

Krishna, Andhra Pradesh

March 16, 2023 to March 16, 2024

Mahatma Gandhi initiated the country-wide Quit India movement in August 1942 against the British government. Every region of the country actively participated in it through activities like boycotts, protests, and public meetings. The people of the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh also contributed hugely. In many places, they targeted government offices, buildings, telegraph offices, and railway stations. To control such heavy protests in the district, the colonial government had a master plan.

The British made arrangements for special police forces, prisons, guns, and gunpowder to punish people who disobeyed the law. To prevent the spread of protests, the press was strictly censored. Many leaders of Krishna district were taken as detainees by the government, including Anne Anjaiah, Peta Bapayya Kakiani Venkataratnam, Marupilla Chitti, Muthuri Krishna Rao Gottipati Bahmayya, Kddali Anjaneyulu, Kamineni Venkatappayya, Duggirala Balaramakrishnayya, Vallabhaneni Ramabrahmam among others. A flag hoisting, a public meeting, and the distribution of pamphlets took place on October 2nd under the leadership of Mrs. Showllinger, a Swiss lady married to a resident of the Krishna district. Unfortunately, the police attacked during the meeting and arrested Mrs. Showllinger and three men.

Similarly, in the Pottilanka village of the district, the police arrested a group of Congress members on grounds of publication of seditious literature as they possessed a cyclostyle machine and anti-British pamphlets sent by Aruna Asaf Ali and Jayaprakash Narayan.
