Andhra Patrika and The Peasant Question

NTR, Andhra Pradesh

February 13, 2023 to February 13, 2024

Andhra Patrika was a Telugu nationalist newspaper founded by Kashinadhuni Nageswara Rao in 1908 from the present NTR district in Andhra Pradesh. It was one of the newspapers that supported the peasants during their rebellion against the zamindars.

The 1930s saw peasant mobilization against the zamindars who were exploiting them with high taxes and rents. This was partly due to the new political consciousness amongst the peasants through social reforms initiated by the Gandhian struggles in the early 20th century. The newspapers in circulation, like Andhra Patrika, extended their support by publishing the activities of the peasants and raising questions regarding their situation.

It gave an opportunity to the peasants to voice their problems, it also criticized the government for not acting on the peasants’ issues and published provocative poems in favour of the Congress party. The Andhra Patrika gave publicity to the marches and agitations organized by the peasants and became a strong platform for the peasants to voice their concerns. Just like every other nationalist newspaper, Andhra Patrika played a crucial role in the freedom struggle of India.
