Sardar Gurmukh Singh was born at village Haltoon, District Ludhiana, Punjab. His father’s name was Haspak Singh. He returned to India on board the ship ‘Kamagatamaru’ and was arrested at Budge Budge – 24 Parganas, West Bengal in 1914. He was sentenced to transportation for life and was deported to the Andamans. After repatriation, while being transferred, he escaped from the running train in 1922. He went to Russia via Afganistan, came back to India and was again arrested and transported to the Andamans. He participated in the second hunger-strike there in Cellular Jail, 1937 July. He was repatriated in November 1937 and finally got released in 1945. He breathed his last in the late seventies.
