Makka Pasi

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

January 17, 2023 to January 17, 2024

Makka Pasi is an unsung hero who played a key role in India's fight for independence. He was born near Lucknow and was a Dalit soldier in the army of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. After the demise of the Nawab, his wife Begum Hazrat Mahal launched the1857 rebellion against the British colonial rule.  Makka Pasi was one of the martyrs in the battle of Sikandar Bagh. Makka Pasi along with an army of 200 pasis killed many British soldiers. His wife, Uda Devi, too sacrificed her life along with him for the cause of the nation. The Dalit members of society made important contributions in the freedom movement of the nation. But the mainstream historical narrative hardly makes a mention of the same. One of the main features of the first freedom struggle of 1857 was the participation of members of the Dalit community. Many of them gave their lives for the country. Warrior Makka Pasi showed indomitable courage and bravery against the British during the first struggle for freedom in 1857 at the Battle of Chinhat. He fought valiantly against the British at the Battle of Chinhat (30 June 1857). He killed many British soldiers before sacrificing his life. The British were stunned to see the courage of this brave soldier. It was from Makka Pasi that Uda Devi took inspiration and subsequently killed 32 British soldiers and officers.
