December 28, 2022

Bhavabhushan Mitra was a Bengali freedom fighter and an influential social worker who was born in 1881 at Balarampur in Jhenaidah district (presently in Bangladesh). He was also known as Swami Satyananda Puri. His father was Shri Shyamacharan Mitra. He was a great thinker, speaker and philosopher and had good communication skills. Bhavabhushan was greatly inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s teachings.

He studied at Jenaidah Government High School and was excellent in the field of sports. During a friendly football match, he became good friends with a boy named Jatin. Suren, who was the nephew of Rabindranth Tagore, taught him and Jatin that they should not only think about India’s freedom but also about the larger Asian Unity. At Suren’s residence in Kolkata, they used to attend meetings. They were impressed by Japanese victory in 1905 and even admired Japan as an Asiatic power.

Bhavabhushan Mitra was part of many organizations such as the Indian independence League, Indian National Congress and Jugantar. He even participated in movements like the Ghadar Movement and Quit India Movement.

Bhavabhushan Mitra died on 27 January 1970 in Calcutta, India.
