Baishnab Charan Nayak

Bhadrak, Odisha

December 26, 2022 to December 26, 2023

Baishnab Charan Nayak was a firebrand young man from Kasimpur village of Bhadrak district. Being inspired by the clarion call of Mahatma Gandhi he left his study at Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, and jumped into the freedom struggle. He organized the youths of his area under the platform of ‘Rakta Bahini’ to prepare for a massive-scale movement. A branch of this organization was also opened in Bahadalpur village. In 1942, just after the commencement of the Quit India Movement, the government of Odisha declared the congress office of Kumbharia under the Bhandaripokhari police station illegal. Baishnab Charan, therefore, organized a meeting in Kaharapokhari on 17 August to decide about the course of action which about five thousand people attended. They decided to set fire to the police outpost of Bhandari Pokhari on the same day. In pursuance of this decision, those five thousand people marched to the police station and burnt it along with two residential police quarters. They also beat two police constables who fell unconscious. Further, they burnt a few other government offices, treasury and sabotaged the telephone and telegraph line, and blew up a wooden bridge. All these actions were taken under the leadership of Baishnab Nayak. Soon, however, Baishnab Charan was arrested along with his fellow freedom fighters. They were sentenced to two years imprisonment. For all these damages, the District Magistrate imposed a punitive tax of Rs 6,000 in twelve nearby villages.
