Nihal Singh Takshak

Nihal Singh Takshak was born on 1 May 1911, in Bhagwi village of what was then Jind state (now in Charkhi Dadri district), his father was Chaudhary Amar Singh, and his mother, Siriya Devi. His educational journey began at the government school in Bamla (Bhiwani), where he completed his middle examination. Moving forward, he did his matriculation from Jat School in Hisar and pursued his F.A. from Birla College in Pilani, Rajasthan.

In 1936, he earned his BA from Ramjas College in Delhi, securing the second position in the university. Despite being offered the post of Tahsildar, he chose a different path, joining as Inspector General (Director) of schools at Birla Education Trust in Pilani on October 1st, 1936. There, he was instrumental in establishing 311 new schools in rural areas.

His political journey began when he was elected as the MLA for the Jind State Representative Assembly, becoming its first MLA in 1937. He founded the Jind State Parjamandal and served as its president until 1948, leading the freedom movement in the region. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the formation of Arya Samaj Loharu, serving as its founder President until December 31st, 1946, and establishing 12 schools under its banner.

Takshak held various governmental positions, including Education and Health Minister in Jind state and later in PEPSU after Independence. Notably, he spearheaded the opening of numerous schools, contributing significantly to the education sector. In 1952, he assumed the role of Finance Minister.

His contributions extended beyond education and politics; he was a staunch advocate for Hindi as the state language, collaborating with leaders like Sardar Patel, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and Lal Bahadur Shastri. His efforts in the Constituent Assembly ensured the prominence of Hindi, a testament to his dedication to national causes.
