Hopan Manjhi and his son Laxman Manjhi, residents of Karmatand of Gomia block, Bermo, Jharkhand. He was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's principles and non-violent policies and joined the freedom struggle. Before going to the Congress session in Ramgarh in the 1940s, Mahatma Gandhi had reached Gomia of Bermo subdivision. A group of thousands of people led by Hopan Manjhi brought him to Karmatand village in the form of a procession by bullock cart. Bapu stayed there in the broken tile house of Hopan Manjhi. Gandhiji was welcomed in the Santali dominant village of Karmatand. In the courtyard of the ancestral house, Tulsi Pinda was worshiped by Bapu. This Tulsi Pinda is still there. Bapu's meeting was held at Gomitand in Gomia. Thousands of people had reached places like Isri, Dumri, Bermo, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, etc. to hear and see him. Hopan Manjhi had mobilized the tribals to participate in the freedom struggle. He used to explain to the people the meaning of the independence of the country. Inspired by Bapu's speech, many elders gave up meat and alcohol. The campaign for the adoption of swadeshi had started. People themselves started making clothes by spinning the charkha. After staying overnight at Hopan Manjhi's house, Gandhiji left for the Ramgarh Congress session in the morning. Although some people say that Gandhiji came to Gomia long before the Ramgarh session. In one case, Hopan Manjhi was fined 2000 rupees by the British government. He had to go to jail for not paying the fine. From 27 July 1930 to 31 March 1931, he was kept in the Central Jail, Hazaribagh. On 26 June 1972, the Jailor of Hazaribagh Central Jail gave him a certificate of freedom fighter. He was MLC from 1950 to 1952 after the formation of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
