Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Jogendra Maharana

Jagatsinghapur, Odisha

August 08, 2022

Jogendra Moharana was born in village Ala of Jagatsinghpur district. He developed an interest in the freedom struggle at a very tiny age. When he was only eight years old, he studied some of the books on Mahatma Gandhi which inspired him to help those freedom fighters of his village who were actively involved in performing satyagrahas. He met many congress leaders in Alakaashram, the Sabarmati Ashram of Odisha where many of the founder members and their associates congregate very often to chalk out plans. He joined the Vanara Sena of the Ashram at the age of only 14 in response to the Quit India call given by Mahatma Gandhi in 1942. The Vanara Sena played a very important role during the freedom struggle who conducted protests and flag marches as well as helped the fighters circulate publications on the freedom struggle. As a member of the Sena Jogendra’s job was to organize meetings and distribute leaflets in Ala and coordinate the activities of Ashram. He was also instrumental in enrolling more members of the Vanar Sena. At that time the patriotic poems of Birakishore Das stirred the people. He used to sing them while making people to people contact in villages. Inspired by those songs many people joined the Sena.

When many local freedom fighters were arrested in 1943 and 1946 and lodged in Cuttack and Berhampur jails, Jogendra and many members of Vanara Sena supplied food to their families and ensured their safety. During this time, he was also involved in setting fire to a police station and some schools. Though he and a few other boys of his age group were caught they could not be punished in court because of their tiny age.

After independence, Jogendra was mostly involved in the development and constructive activities in his village. In 2015, he was elected sarpanch of Alapanchayat.
