Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Partab Nath Nag, born on 11-03-1915 was the eldest son of Ram Nath Nag, whose youngest son Dr. Surendra Nath Nag was also a member of the Indian Independence League (IIL) and killed by the Japanese on 23 March 1943. Partab Nath Nag obtained his graduation and teacher’s training from Rangoon.

In April 1942, he was elected as an Executive Member of the IIL. He was arrested in October-November 1943 and incarcerated in the Cellular Jail. To put pressure on him to confess himself as a British Spy, his wife Savitri Bai was arrested several times. Both of them received brutal and barbaric torture in jail. On 30 January 1944, Partab Nath Nag was killed by the Japanese squad and buried in an ‘L’ shaped mass grave with 43 others at Homfraygunj in South Andaman. A memorial ‘Balidan Vedi’ has been erected in memory of them at the spot where they got martyrdom.
