Prime Minister inaugurated 141st International Olympic Committee Session

Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai, India on 14th October 2023. IOC President Mr. Thomas Bach also graced the event with his presence. The Prime Minister highlighted the significance of this meeting happening in India after 40 years and sports being a vital part of India’s culture and lifestyle. The Indus Valley Civilization, or the Vedic Period, India’s sporting legacy can be found in ancient structures of the country.

The Prime Minister mentioned the scientific evidence present in various ancient sports structures of India. Dholavira UNESCO World Heritage site had traces of Sports infrastructure in the urban planning that was done 5000 years ago. In the excavation process, two stadiums were also found at the site.

The Prime Minister attributed India's impressive achievement in the realm of sports to the efforts of the Government. In addition to highlighting India's best-ever performance at the recently concluded Asian Games and the new records set by young Indian athletes at the World University Games. He recalled the outstanding performances of several competitors during the recent Olympics. He emphasized that the positive improvements are evidence of how India's sports landscape is fast changing.

The Prime Minister also talked about the fact that India has effectively demonstrated its capacity to plan international sporting events. India has recently organized numerous international competitions, including the Chess Olympiad, in which 186 nations participated, the Football Under-17 Women's World Cup, the Hockey World Cup, the Women's World Boxing Championship, the Shooting World Cup, and the ongoing Cricket World Cup.

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister said “India is eager to host the Olympics in the country. India will leave no stone unturned in the preparation for the successful organization of the Olympics in 2036, this is the dream of the 140 crore Indians”.
