World Water Day 2022

World Water Day 2022

March 22, 2022

World water day, which is held globally on 22nd March, focuses on spreading awareness about the importance of freshwater and on promoting sustainable management solutions for freshwater.

This year, World Water Day is being celebrated with the theme of ‘Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible.' UNESCO releases the‘ World Water Development Report’ each year which helps decision-makers formulate water conservation policies. This year’s report titled “Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible” was launched at the 9th World Water Forum in Dankar, Senegal.

Groundwater, which accounts for the majority of the world's liquid freshwater, has the potential to offer countries enormous social, economic, and environmental advantages. Groundwater provides half of the water used for household use by the worldwide population, including drinking water for the great majority of rural residents who do not have access to public or private water delivery systems, as well as around a quarter of all water for agriculture.

However, this natural resource is frequently mishandled and even misused, putting it at risk of depletion and contamination. The immense potential of groundwater and the need to manage it responsibly can no longer be neglected in the face of escalating water shortages in many regions of the world.

Directly from the Prime Minister

Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Social Media to encourage people to take a pledge to save every last drop of water and also appreciated the efforts of the individuals and organizations who are working towards saving and conserving water.

About World Water Day

The United Nations General Assembly passed resolution A/RES/47/193 in 1992 designating March 22 as World Day for Water. The UN encouraged all countries to increase deliberations around the conservation of water to increase awareness and action. These actions could be in the form of documentaries, conferences, seminars, and expositions.
