Biman Chandra Bora

Sonitpur, Assam

December 02, 2022 to December 02, 2023

Bimon Ch. Bora was a school teacher and resident of Sootia Thana, Tezpur. The Quit India Movement was in full swing and there were nationwide protests against the British. As a part of the movement, he along with his nine associates led a procession of about 1500 persons including women on 20 August 1942 at Sootia and entered the thana compound along with others in procession in spite of the assembly having been declared unlawful by the O.C. of the Sootia Police Station and walked around the Thana building shouting anti-war, anti-British and anti-government slogans i.e. “Don’t help in war-effort”, “Down with the British”, “Down with repressive policy”, “Give-up Government services”, “Come out”, “Don’t obey the police”, “The thana no longer exists and Drive out the British”. Biman then hoisted the Congress flag in front of the thana building within the compound where a meeting of around 1000 persons was held thereafter which was addressed by Biman. In his address, Biman said that the Swaraj was declared from that day and that the thana belongs to them and that nobody should help in the war efforts and that the British Government should be driven out. The prosecution has examined three witness-all police officers to prove the case. The Special Magistrate found his activities undoubtedly amounted to be a “Prejudicial Act”-their action in asking the Government Servants to give up their job amounted to inducement to public servants to fail in the performance of their duties- their action in asking people not to help in war efforts and to drive out the British tended to influence the public in a manner prejudicial to the defense of British India and to the efficient prosecution of the war-their action in defying the lawful authority of the police prejudiced public safety and interest and contravened the provisions of rule 38(I)(A) of the Defense of India Rule and are guilty under rule 38(5) of the Defense of India Rules 1940. Biman took the leading part in the procession and was sentenced to one year and six months of rigorous imprisonment.
