Non-cooperation in Dakshin Kannada

Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka

December 02, 2022 to December 02, 2023

The city of Dakshin Kannada in Karnataka was the centre of activities related to the freedom struggle in the early phase of twentieth century. It became a symbol of crowd-funding campaign led by Sadashiva Rao during the Non-Cooperation movement initiated by Mahatma Gandhi.

The people of the district saw matured political consciousness and national awakening due to efforts of Indian National Congress, spread of modern education and publication of journals. Dakshin Kannada was a cradle of nationalist publications. One can find publications such as Tilak Sandesha (1919), Satyagrahi (1921) and Swadeshi Pracharaka (1940) where the prominent motive of such pubications lay in publicising the freedom movement. The non-cooperation movement gained momentum in Dakshin Kannada due to efforts of Sadashiva Rao. When Gandhiji along with Shaukat Ali addressed a crowd in Mangalore much contributions of cash and ornaments were made instantaneously. Mohanppa Thingalaya resigned from office of honorary magistracy. A. B. Shetty and B.V. Baliga left from Madras Assembly. Many advocates gave up practice, students left schools and colleges and a few government officials resigned from their jobs. Boycotting, picketing and encouraging of swadeshi (indigenous) goods was undertaken.

In regions of Mangalore and Udupi of Dakshin Kannada district became centres of the non- cooperation movement where every point of non-cooperation was practiced. Even after the halt of the movement, constructive program like weaving khadi was continued in the district thus, marking an awakened spirit of nationalism.
