A. Kannusamy Pillai was born in 1920 to Ayyasamy and Kuttiyammal in Salem. He was deeply interested in the politics and ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi, Rajaji, Pandit Nehru, and Kamaraj. He was the founder of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Youth Sangam at Salem in 1936. He took part in the Salt satyagraha on 4 December 1940 near Omalur Mariyamman Temple, Salem. To honor his sacrifices, the Government of India, in 1972, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Indian Independence, awarded him a Tamra Patra. He was recognized as a freedom fighter and was awarded the Central Martyrs' Pension and State Government Pension. He passed away on 30 June 1981.
