October 04, 2022

Lakshmidas Purushottam Asar was born in 1883 in Ahmedabad. He left his business in 1919 in Malabar and joined the Sabarmati Ashram. Khadi was made in various states at that time. Jamnalal Bajaj, a member of the Congress working committee, started the division of khadi for its promotion. Lakshmidas assisted him in this pursuit. In the Congress session at Ahmedabad in 1921, there was a khadi swadeshi exhibition. It was managed by Lakshmidas. He took the responsibility of attending the marchers of the Dandi satyagraha at Dandi. When the Bardoli Swaraj Ashram was seized by the government, he was arrested with other workers and imprisoned. He was also arrested from Sabarmati Ashram during individual Satyagraha and the ‘Quit India’ movement. In 1949, when the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi was founded, he served as its first secretary for four years and stayed in Delhi. When the government founded the Khadi Board and the Khadi Commission, he served as an advisor for various departments for five years.
