Arjunbhai Ramjibhai Badhiya

Amreli, Gujarat

October 04, 2022

Arjunbhai Badhiya was born on 2 October 1905 at Lathi village of Amreli district. His parents were Joshi Jugatram Dave and Ansuyabahen. He took part in the Nagpur flag Satyagraha along with others.

There were 79 soldiers taking part in the Dandi March starting on 12 March 1930. Gandhiji saw that the list contained four members of the Badhiya family, so he cancelled the name of Arjunbhai. He insisted that he should stay in the Ashram.  Ramjibhai was an expert in the weaving of cotton and wool. He came and settled in the Sabarmati Ashram with his family in 1919 as Gandhiji sent Lakshmidas Ashar to bring his family along with households and the equipment for spinning. The Badhiya family played an important role in the freedom movement as per the directives of Gandhi. Gandhi sent Arjunbhai for the removal of untouchability at the Sarbhon village, Bardoli taluka in Surat district, along with Shankerlal Banker and Chhaganlal to convey the messages of  Dandi March, distribute the pamphlets and also look after his family. He also participated in the ‘Quit India’ movement in 1942. After the independence, Arjunbhai and his family stayed in the Ashram and kept on doing constructive activities like khadi and village industries, agriculture, and animal husbandry.
