Kanaklata Udyan (Tezpur)
One of the prominent events in the Indian Independence Movement was the 1942 Quit India Movement, the ripples of which were felt in Assam. The Darrang district played a proactive role during these tumultuous times. During this period, the activities, participation, and sacrifices of an organization called Mrityu Bahini left an everlasting impression on the history of the freedom movement.
One of the several leaders who played an important role during the Quit Indian Movement was Omeo Kumar Das, a Gandhian. He and his wife Pushpalata Das was given the responsibility of organizing the women of the Darrang district. The satyagrahis were divided into Shanti Bahini and Mrityu Bahini, and they decided to show their resistance against the British by staging processions and hoisting the National Flag atop several police stations. The government clamped down very heavily on the protestors. On September 20, 1942, Kanaklata Barua, a teenager, led a group of unarmed villagers to the police station with the intention of hoisting the flag. However, she and her helper Mukunda Kakati were mercilessly killed. On the same day in Dhekiajuli, the police fired at an unarmed procession of satyagrahis who had entered the police station to hoist the flag. Amongst the 11 dead were three teenage girls: Tileswari, Numali, and Khahuli.
