Jhumuk Lal Dubey

Durg, Chhattisgarh

March 10, 2025 to March 10, 2028

Jhumuk Lal Dubey, born in Durg to Shri Gangadhar Dubey, was greatly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and the Satyagraha movement. His admiration for Gandhiji deepened when Gandhiji visited Chhattisgarh for the second time on 22 November 1933. A large public gathering was organized at the Moti Talab Ground in Durg to address the upliftment of Scheduled Castes. This event attracted around 50,000 people eager to have just a glimpse of the Mahatma and hear his words. Jhumuk, deeply moved by the significance of the event, was among those who could not resist the desire to see and meet Gandhiji as he passed through a roadshow on his way to the rally venue.

By 1942, the Quit India Movement had gained momentum, and the call for the British colonialists to leave India resonated across the nation. Inspired by Gandhiji's leadership and the fervour of the movement, Jhumuk, alongside his companions, actively joined the struggle for freedom. The British government swiftly responded to the increasing resistance, and Jhumuk Lal was arrested along with many others. He was sentenced to six months of imprisonment, from 17 September 1942 to 1 April 1943, in the Raipur Central Jail. During his time in prison, he and his fellow freedom fighters solidified their commitment to serving the nation and fighting for India’s independence. Jhumuk’s involvement in the Quit India Movement left a lasting mark on his life and contributed to the broader struggle for freedom.
