Guntur, Andhra Pradesh

February 04, 2025 to February 04, 2028

Ramakoteswara Rao was born on 22 October 1894 in Narasa Rao Peta, Guntur District, to Rukminamma and Viyanna. He completed his law education in Guntur, Bandar, and Madras, and began practicing law in Narasa Rao Peta. Inspired by C. Rajagopalachari and Pattabhi, Rao played a prominent role in the Indian independence movement. He participated in the Annie Besant Home Rule Movement and left his legal profession in 1921 to join Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement. He campaigned for freedom, independence, and the use of indigenous products, particularly ‘khadi’ cloth. He took part in the Salt Satyagraha in 1930 and in the Quit India and individual Satyagraha movements, respectively, which led to his imprisonment for three and a half years in Thanjavur and Tiruchirapalli jails. His associates included Kalluri Chandramouli and Bejawada Gopal Reddy.

Ramakoteswara Rao was also a distinguished literary figure. He worked as a sub-editor for the Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu's newspaper 'Swarajya' and inspired many through the medium of his writings. His books Maharashtra Veerulu and Count Kapur of India motivated students and scholars to join the freedom struggle. He founded the monthly magazine 'Triveni,' which he edited for about four decades, leaving a lasting legacy in the hearts of his readers.
