Brajabhusan Gupta, born in 1869 in Berhampore, was a prominent freedom fighter, the first President of the Murshidabad District Congress, and a distinguished lawyer. His political journey began with the Anti-Partition Movement in 1905. When the Murshidabad District branch of the Congress Party was established in 1921 during the Non-Cooperation Movement, Gupta was nominated as its first president. This marked the beginning of the "Brojabhusan Gupta era" in Murshidabad, following the era of Baikuntha Sen.
Brajabhusan Gupta played a pivotal role in making Congress more mass-oriented. He was the face of the "Baluchar Congress" in 1920 and the "Salar Congress" in 1921. Through his efforts, he successfully spread the freedom movement among the common people by setting up Congress branch offices throughout the Murshidabad district. It was mainly due to his initiative that the number of Congress members in the district reached 5,000 by the year 1922.
It was remarked about him, "He was the only person in Murshidabad in the pre-Independence period who may be termed as a true leader of the masses and upon whom the people of Murshidabad, irrespective of their caste and creed, had confidence in any situation and matter."
Brajabhusan Gupta had close associations with Mahatma Gandhi, Deshbandhu C.R. Das, S.C. Bose, and Jatindra Mohan Sengupta, who often visited Berhampore for meetings during the course of the freedom movement and stayed at his house. Brajabhusan Gupta passed away in 1934.
