He participated in several demonstrations and protests during this crucial time for the nation. In one such demonstration at the time of the Quit India Movement (1942), his fearlessness led to his arrest. He was sent to the Central Jail in New Delhi.

Radhey Shyam remained an active participant in the freedom movement. It was after independence that his contributions were recognized, most notably through the prestigious Tamra Patra bestowed upon him by the then Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi. He passed away on 7 November 1975. At that time, he was working in LIC.
