Charu Chandra Bose

Kolkata, West Bengal

October 17, 2023 to October 17, 2024

Charu Chandra Bose was born in Shobna village in the Khulna district of undivided Bengal, which is now a part of Bangladesh. His father was Kesablal Bose. Charu Chandra had a congenital disability, as his right hand was numb from birth. Despite his frail and thin physique, his mental fortitude was remarkable.

While still in school, Charu Chandra was drawn to the activities of the Dhaka Anushilan Dol, and he became a member. Despite his physical limitations, he displayed incredible mental strength when, in a remarkable act of bravery, he shot and killed Ashutosh Biswas, a lawyer working for the British rulers, right in the courtroom. Ashutosh Biswas, with his title of Rai Bahadur and wealth, was known for his greed and anti-Indian sentiments. He frequently represented the British government in cases against freedom fighters.

When the revolutionaries of the Anushilan Samiti decided to eliminate him, Charu Chandra Bose willingly took on the responsibility for the murder. On February 10, 1909, using his crippled right hand to hold the gun and his left hand to fire, Charu Chandra Bose shot Ashutosh Biswas in a courtroom filled with police officers. Ashutosh Biswas died instantly. The police swiftly arrested Charu Chandra and imprisoned him in Alipore Central Jail. Despite enduring inhumane torture, Charu Chandra never divulged any information about the Anushilan Samiti. He simply told the police that it had been predicted that Ashutosh would die by his hands, and he, in turn, would meet his fate by hanging. Ashutosh was an enemy of the country, and that's why he had taken such drastic action.

Charu Chandra Bose was eventually hanged in Alipore Central Jail on March 19, 1909. It's worth noting that according to jail records, his name is misspelt as Charu Charan Bose.
