Nationalist Poems of Chellapila Venkata Sastry

, Andhra Pradesh

June 07, 2023 to June 07, 2024

Chellapilla Venkata Sastry, from Rajahmundry in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, made significant contributions to the development of modern Telugu poetry. He wrote remarkable works in a range of literary styles, including lyric, love poems, bucolic verse, and protest music. Some of the recurring themes in this poetry are socio-economic strife, stories of former heroes, and the creation of a socialist society. Progressivism disseminated the philosophy of freedom and equality, as well as an opposition to wars, which invariably resulted in large-scale slaughter. His Telugu writing began with a literary style and evolved into a basic conversational tone.

His works include stories of Rabindranath Tagore and Indian heroes. In addition, he wrote the Accession of King George, which expresses nationalist sentiments against colonial rule. It is impossible to summarise their lives in a few words, yet theirs were exciting lives, and every incident mattered, directed, and influenced their work. The current sketch is designed to provide a glimpse of their music, background, fight for schooling, struggle in their careers, the depths they saw, and the heights they achieved.

His collaboration with Divakarla Tirupati Sastry is also considered meritorious; in works such as Panigrihha and Sravananandam, they foreshadow a current trend in their concern with social issues. Due to the requirement for direct engagement with the audience, they struck a tone of freshness, energy, and simplicity in their renditions of Satavadhanams.
