Tafazzul Hussain Khan, known as ‘Risaldar’ was the Nawab of Farrukhabad, present day Uttar Pradesh. He was described as one of the 'principal leaders' of the 1857 revolt of independence.
He presented himself as a supporter of the British government who only supported the 'ill-mannered brutes' because he was being held captive by those rebels. In his words, he was awaiting assistance from the British government, as he feared for his honour and his life from the rebels. He said that he did not have enough resources to scare them away. Whereas it later turned out, he lied to the colonial government in order to support the rebels.
For his support to the rebels, he was punished severely. His properties were seized by the British. He was sentenced to death but later was sentenced to lifetime exile to any place of his wish. He chose Mecca, the holy place for Muslims, and was sent to Hejaz, where he spent the last of his years in poverty. He was the last nawab of Farrukhabad, after which the region was taken over by the British Empire.
