Students' movements occupy an important place in the political history of Assam. The Asom Chhatra Sanmilan or the Assam Students Conference is regarded as the first and largest student organisation of the state. It was formed on 25th December 1916 at the Latasil playground, in Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam with Rasarash Laxminath Bebaruah as its founding president.
Prominent freedom fighter Chandrath Sarma is also credited with forming and leading the Sanmilan in its initial stage. It was set up as a platform for the student community to promote Assamese literature, language and culture. However, over time, the Sanmilan became increasingly associated with socio- political and economic conditions, as well as student problems in the country.
The first session of the Asom Chhatra Sanmilan was held in Guwahati. It went on to occupy a prominent position with respect to student involvement in the socio-political developments. With its radicalisation over the next few years after formation, the Asom Chhatra Sanmilan played a crucial role in the freedom struggle in Assam. They participated in the Non-Cooperation movement in huge numbers. Students as a whole, especially in the organisation remained active throughout the freedom struggle.
