The Aga Khan Palace is linked to the freedom struggle as the place where Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai, among others were interned following the launch of the Quit India Movement. During this imprisonment, Kasturba’s health deteriorated, and she breathed her last in the Palace in 1944. Desai also suffered a massive heart attack and passed away here. Both their samadhi’s are placed on the Palace premises.
The Palace is now governed by the Gandhi National Memorial Society. In 2003, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) declared the site as a monument of national importance.
