Lala Lajpat Rai lost his life after being brutally lathi charged by the police during the Simon Commission agitations. His death was a shocking tragedy which evoked resentment and anger from the people of India. Kanpur, in Uttar Pradesh also saw massive demonstrations protesting his death.
The people of Kanpur pledged to commemorate his demise by observing “Lala Lajpat Rai Diwas”. The students of the city came out to the streets and organized demonstrations and processions on the streets. The young freedom fighters organized a spontaneous strike in schools and colleges and did not attend their classes for the day. The role played by the young volunteers of D.A.V College, Bishambhar Nath Sanatan Dharam College, and Guru Narayan Khatri High School were at the forefront of the agitations.
Lala Lajpat Rai was a firm believer in the power of the youth and hoped that the young generations of the nation would overthrow the yoke of colonialism once and for all. This belief was amply borne out by the response of the youth of Kanpur to his death.
