Educational reforms after Swadeshi in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Telangana

January 25, 2023 to January 25, 2024

The Swadeshi movement in Hyderabad, along with its great political upsurge, also witnessed tremendous changes in the field of education.

Dr. Aghornath Chattopadhyaya, the great champion of education, visionary scholar, and renowned professor is the name that should be remembered first in the Swadeshi Educational Reforms of Hyderabad. He was the founding principal of Nizam College in Hyderabad but resigned in 1907 and continued educational activities till his death in 1915. He encouraged modern education in the mother tongue and established Anjuman-i-Maoyar-ul-Uloom to propagate educational activities in Urdu. As a result of the first Hyderabad Educational Conference, Osmania University, where Urdu was given prime importance, was established. The establishment of Vivek Vardhini school promoted modern education in the Marathi language.

The educational activities that sprung during the Swadeshi Movement were a great contribution to the academic field of Hyderabad. The legacy of such educational reforms continues to nurture scholars and academicians in Independent India as well.
