Rajnarayan Bose was born on 7th September 1826 in the North 24 Parganas district of present-day West Bengal. He was an avid writer, educationist, litterateur, reformer, and nationalist.
Bose was a staunch advocate of Hindu revivalism. Besides being the founder of the house of Brahmo Samaj, he also established a public library, numerous schools, debate associations, and literary societies in and around the Midnapore district. He was therefore awarded the honorary title of ‘Rishi’ (Sage) for his contributions to philanthropic causes. Apart from that, he wrote numerous books in both Bengali and English language. Some of his books include ‘Rajnarayan Basur Baktrta’, ‘Dharmatattva Dipika’, ‘Hindu Dharmer Shresthattva’, 'A Defence of Brahmoism and the Brahma Samaj', and many more. He was also associated with numerous associations and political organizations such as the Indian Association, Young India, and the Sanjibani Sabha.
Rajnarayan Bose was later on also accredited with the title of ‘The Grandfather of Indian Nationalism’ for his relentless initiatives or activities for the welfare of the Indian masses, who were oppressed and subjugated by the colonial regime of the British imperialists.
