Rao Tula Ram

Rao Tula Ram (1825-1863) was an Ahir chieftain from Rewari, Haryana. He led the revolt of 1857 from the region against the British government.

 

On 17th May 1857, Tula Ram took control of the Rewari Tehsil and formed his local government with Rampura as the headquarters. He recognized Bahadur Shah Zafar as the Emperor and collected one and a half lakhs of rupees, with which he raised an army of around five thousand soldiers to maintain law and order in the region. Tula Ram was a brilliant administrator and military commander. To make his territory safe and self-sufficient, he established a workshop in Rampura fort, which manufactured guns and ammunition. On 16th November 1857 when British troops brutally crushed the rebellion in Rewari under Brigadier General Showers and Lieutenant Colonel Gerrard, Tula Ram was forced to flee the country. He tried getting help from rulers of Iran, Afghanistan, and Russia but failed in the attempt and died on 23rd September 1863 at the age of 38.

 

Rao Tula Ram fought the British Empire till his last breath for which his contributions are remembered by all.
