President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind inaugurates National Women Legislators Conference 2022

The National Women Legislators’ Conference 2022 was inaugurated on 26th May 2022, by The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind. The event took place at Thiruvananthapuram and was hosted by Kerala Legislative Assembly as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

While addressing the gathering, The President elevated the momentum of the event by saying that the conference is being inaugurated at the most appropriate time when the whole nation is preparing to commemorate the 75th year of Independence.

The President was elated to see people’s enthusiastic participation in various events held under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav which showcases their zeal to connect with history and remember the foundation of the nation.

The President acknowledged the role of women in India’s freedom saga. He recalled the fact that in the 19th Century when only men were there on the other side, the strength of the Indian army was boosted by the presence of many women soldiers and revolutionaries as well. He also recalled the active participation of Women in the Non-cooperation Movement and Quit India Movement which is some of the most successful examples of India’s retaliation against British rule.

This inspiring speech from the President also acknowledged the contribution of several Women freedom fighters and revolutionaries such as Rani Lakshmibai, Sarojini Naidu, Madam Bhikaji Cama, Captain Lakshmi Sehgal, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya, etc.

Speaking about India's progress, the President praised the efforts of the Constitutional framers who understood Women's voting rights as a significant factor in shaping democracy.

The President also acknowledged Women's contribution in various other domains such as Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Management, collectively known as 'STEMM’, and are shattering all barriers that are inspirational for all.

The President also added that the mindset toward gender sensitivity including the third gender has been changing and advancing for the better. Focused initiatives like ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ are also doing their best to complement the progress of Women. Towards the end, he congratulated the Kerala Legislative Assembly and its Secretariat for organizing the conference.
